Therapy for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), or “Heaves”

Inhalation Therapy for Horses Diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), or “Heaves”

Drugs Used:

  1. Albuterol: 90 mcg/puffs
  2. Fluticasone: 220 mcg/puffs

Treatment Protocol (for adult horse, approximately 1000 lbs): 

Day Drug  ‘puffs’ per Dose Frequency
 1 – 14  Albuterol  5  30 minutes before excercise
 1 – 14  Fluticasone  9  Twice daily
 15 – 21  Fluticasone  9  Once daily
21 – 27  Fluticasone  9 Once every other day
 28  Fluticasone  9  As needed, not more than once daily
